The End of Insulin

A new hormone can create cells to produce Insulin,

a long time coming as diabetics everywhere are rejoicing. Scientists stumbled onto a hormone that can help people with Type-2 diabetes naturally make the insulin they lack, without drugs or needles. This hormone is called betatrophin. It was discovered when a co-director of stem cell research were searching for a way to mimic Type-2 diabetes in animals.

In humans, the insulin making cells in the pancreas gradually lose their ability to sense and respond to glucose levels in the blood. However when the mice were given a compound by scientists designed to shut down insulin production, they were surprised to find that the animal’s pancreases responded by popping out more cells that produce the betatrophin hormone.

 

 

The agent responsible for this repopulation, betatrophin. Over the course of several weeks the levels of the hormone shot up and the pancreas began pumping out insulin making beta cells at 30 times their normal rate.

The scientists are now measuring how long lasting betatrophin effects are and are preparing to soon investigate the hormone in human trials. This finding is an exciting breakthrough in diabetes research, which for many years was primarily focused on finding ways to supplement insulin levels with drugs and injections vs. searching for ways to eliminate the disease altogether.

Experts believed that once beta cells were compromised, they could not be made to regenerate. These same experts also were under the impression that only a subset of these cells could make insulin, so after diabetes set in, there were not enough of theses cells left to produce the hormone.


In 2007 it was proven that all cells in the pancreas are capable for producing insulin. The desire of these scientists to better understand this process is what led to the discovery of betatrophin. However they would have never guessed that the answer to treating diabetes lies in such a simple solution.

The scientist all focused on complex ways of producing and manipulating stem cells to make more beta cells that churn out insulin. However if betatrophin can do that by itself in human trials, giving patients the hormone could in fact not only help them reduce the need for insulin but also eliminate their need for medications and insulin shots all together.

Even more interesting is finding ways to stop new beta cells from being destroyed by the immune system as it happens with Type-1 diabetes, betatrophin could possibly help those patients as well. Even if betatrophin just minimizes the use or need for insulin producing medications it could be several years before human trials are ready to begin.


Overview on other possible hopefuls include fat blockers. Fat buildup in muscles can hamper cells’ ability to respond to insulin. However a group of researchers showed that blocking fat with a protein called VEGF-B could help prevent Type-2 diabetes. In addition, scientists at Washington University in St. Louis are researching an intestinal enzyme that could help cells break down sugar which would also be a giant leap for patients dealing with Type-2 diabetes.

Love your Oats…

Rarely does the thought of creating something new cross our minds…yea right? So with this said, here is an amazing dish inspired not by rice or pasta, however with none other than Oats!!

Bolgnese

This dish is gorgeous, fresh, nutrient-dense, full of rustic, earthy flavors, and fills the kitchen with the most amazing of aromas, introducing Spinach Oats! With its classic Italian flavors, this reminds me of spaghetti bolognese. It has no meat, cheese, or pasta, but it’s just as hearty.

Makes one serving;

Ingredients:
1 cup water
1/4 cup steel-cut oats
1 cup fresh or frozen organic spinach
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
1/4 cup marinara sauce
1/3 cup ground beef style vegetable protein crumbles (vegan option)
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Boil water and stir in oats, reducing heat to medium. Cook for about 5 minutes, then taste-test oats; they should be about halfway done. Stir in spinach and nutritional yeast, and continue to simmer on medium heat about 5 minutes or until spinach is thawed and oats are at preferred chewiness. Stir in marinara, protein crumbles, salt, and pepper and cook another 1 to 2 minutes to evenly heat all ingredients.

Replacing Your Toxic Enviroment

bathroom-sink-vanityAs we read the occasional headlines that yet another standard ingredient in the products we use every day turns out to be a toxic counter to the very health and cleanliness the product is supposed to promote. Sometimes the easiest way to ensure that you’re using the healthiest products, from soap to toothpaste is to simply make your own. You can easily make safe, non toxic effective toiletries including Shampoo, Soaps and Deodorant at home using simple and healthy ingredients.  A great way to start eliminating your toxic environmental products is to start in the bathroom.

 

Everything we use to clean up is really a toxic mess.  If you’ve ever read the labels on health and hygiene products, you know it can be a challenge to find a product that doesn’t contain long lists of toxic ingredients you can’t even pronounce, let alone know what they are or what they’re for and the havoc it can cause your body from repeated use.

One can easily argue that most of these ingredients are not in the amounts that can be hazardous to your health, however when you really look into how many toxic ingredients we consume every day from the foods we eat, to the products we use on our bodies, to the soaps we wash our dishes and clothes in, to the chemicals we come into contact with unwillingly like second hand smoke, gasoline fumes we breathe when we fuel our cars to the air we breathe around freeways and roads.  It is no wonder we are a toxic wasteland and our health is paying for it all.


Let’s take a look at some of the basics.  The first thing we need to take a look at is the quality of your tooth paste.  If it has fluoride, or any other ingredients to whiten, or kill germs or even un-natural sweeteners, it is toxic to your body. Here is a great tooth paste you can make using all natural ingredients.  Use a fifty/fifty ratio of coconut oil to baking soda, start with a small batch and use a couple of tablespoons of each.

Add a few drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil, and a bit of Stevia for sweetness.  After mixing your toxic free toothpaste, place it in a glass jar with a lid, and this does not need to be refrigerated.  Use just like you would your old toxic toothpaste.

Let’s take a look at the soaps. Unless you work on dirty and greasy engines all day, you really do not need any soap with industrial names you cannot pronounce.  A simple soap is Shea Butter Soap which is made by taking 2 cups of vegan glycerin soap base, melted in a double boiler, 2 tablespoons of Shea butter melted separately, and then add several drops of your favorite essential oil.  I use lavender for my evening shower soap and peppermint for the mornings and after a good workout.  Mix all these ingredients well, and pour into molds similar to small food storage containers, and let cool.


Raw Organic Vegan Foods

Shampoo has an average of fifteen known chemicals that are hazardous to you and your skin.  Why we consider even using this stuff that can take stains off concrete will always be a mystery to me.  Some of the ingredients to avoid are sodium laurel sulfate, tetrasodium and propylene glycol.  Look them up in a dictionary or simply use an online thesaurus and I can assure you will never consider using this stuff on your body.  To make a simple natural shampoo, use some of these great alternatives:

 

Baking Soda: Works great as a shampoo alternative. Mildly alkaline, baking soda deep cleans your hair from dirt and hair products. Mix about one tablespoon in one cup of water. Use an empty shampoo bottle, water bottle, or a squeeze bottle to dispense in hair just like shampoo and rinse well.

 

Apple Cider Vinegar: Make a hair rinse mixing 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with a quart of water. Don’t worry about the vinegar smell; it will evaporate after a while. This mixture adds shine and works great on dandruff.


Olive Oil: A wonderful conditioner and hair mask. Wet your hair slightly and add about a teaspoon of olive oil and rub specially on the ends. Wrap your hair inside a towel or shower cap and let it stand up to an hour. Wash well. Your hair will be silky soft and shiny.

 

Avocado and Honey: Mash these ingredients together and rub the mixture on your hair. This is a super-moisturizing hair mask you can use once a week to keep your locks healthy.


Raw Organic Coconut - Live Superfoods

Deodorants are applied under the arms, and if you take a look at our bodies anatomy, our arm pits are designed to serve a certain purpose.  The arrangement of the chest wall, shoulder bones and muscles, and the upper arm create a small hollow called the armpit. The armpit is the underside of the shoulder joint, and is among the warmest areas of the body.

The armpit is also called the axilla and allows for blood and lymph vessels serving the arm to travel through the armpit. There are more than 20 lymph nodes, (small lumps of tissue that are part of the body’s lymphatic system, which helps fight infection) in the armpit. These lymph nodes normally cannot be felt through the skin. The armpits have a high concentration of hair follicles and sweat glands.

Applying anything chemically based in these areas is a huge cause of concern and should not be taken lightly.  Take a look at your deodorant’s ingredient list, did you see something like Parabens, Triclosan and  Propylene glycol?  If you did, be shocked at what these chemicals can do to your lymphatic system.  So now it’s good to remember why you might want to choose a natural deodorant in the first place.  Conventional products tend to contain a whole host of best to avoid substances including hormone disruptors, petrochemicals, lung irritants, and other suspect ingredients.

If you search the Internet, you’ll also find quite a bit of discussion about links between deodorant chemicals and both Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer, these links are unproven, but the specter of a problem is enough for some people to avoid conventional deodorants all together.  Here are a few natural alternatives you can make at home that really work.


This recipe is easy to make, inexpensive and works better than commercial brands and it doesn’t stain your clothes! You’ll just have to make your own batch to see how heavenly the scent of coconut oil is when mixed with spicy essential oils.

Ingredients

1/3 cup coconut oil (solid state)

1/4 cup baking soda (aluminum-free)

1/4 cup arrowroot powder

Add Your favorite essential oils (optional)

Instructions

Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder in a glass bowl.
Add the coconut oil (do not warm or melt it) and use a fork or pastry blender to thoroughly blend it into the dry ingredients.  Add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils and blend completely.
Add more coconut oil or arrowroot powder/baking soda if needed until the texture is about the same consistency as commercial deodorant.

Scoop the mixture into a small jar or container and store at room temperature. To apply, use your fingers to scoop out a pea-size amount of the deodorant and massage it into your armpits daily or as needed. Allow a minute or two for the deodorant to set before getting dressed.

These are just three of the most commonly used needs that we consume every day.  If there are special and unique products you use I suggest, get on the internet and find all your replacements and remove all toxins from your body.  Not just on the inside but also on the outside.  You will feel a huge difference in your health and wellbeing.

Exercise Ball Exercises

Stott2The Exercise ball is one of the best and unique fitness tools that is out there today. It is also one of the least utilized pieces of equipment. Aquilino Cosani, an Italian engineer, first manufactured the ball to be a toy back in 1963. It wasn’t until a physical therapist, Mary Quinton, utilized the ball for children with neurological disorders. The exercise ball did not make it to the US until the 1970 and it seems that the general public is just starting to get aware of its benefits.  Exercise ball exercises are fun and exciting.

What makes the exercise ball exercises so effective is that it forces the user to use many stabilizing muscles to balance while performing the exercise. This means that more muscle fibers are firing, you are burning more calories and because of the position that you are usually in, it puts a lot of emphasis on your core (rectus abdominis, lower back, transverse abdominis, internal and external oblique’s.) Everyone seems to want to have tight abs, this is the reason why I wanted to write this article for one of two reasons.


Core Training at Power Systems

One important reason is that Fitness Exercise Balls are a fun workout for the whole family and two, is the art of how to Choose the Best Exercise Ball is just as fun.

Whether you are wishing to lose weight or tone up muscles using fitness exercise balls and resistance tubes can prove very effective in achieving your goals. As you will soon discover when considering purchasing an exercise ball or resistance tubes, these pieces of fitness equipment have many different types to choose from.  So choosing the right equipment for you can prove somewhat of a challenge.


When it comes to losing weight and toning up your muscles, an exercise ball and the right exercises are very important. You could if you want spend money on a gym membership but having the right inexpensive tools can prove just as effective.

Do you use yoga to help you get fit? If you do, have you considered using a yoga exercise ball to help with your poses? In fact this piece of equipment is not only useful to those who already doing yoga regularly but for those who are only just starting to use it. For those who do yoga on a regular basis will find that helps to make the yoga exercises more of a challenge.

With ball exercises the secret is to know that exercise balls are unstable for obvious reasons. Using an exercise ball can be quite fun. The difficulty comes from the balls roundness, which also contribute to giving you a tremendous workout.


Try the exercise ball the next time at the gym or try an exercise using a stability ball besides doing crunches. That is what I meant when I previously stated that this was one of the most least utilized pieces of equipment at the gym. The exercise ball happens to be one most dynamic pieces of equipment at that gives you a huge range of exercise options.

One example would be a basic squat, Position the exercise ball between your lower back and the wall, and move your feet out about 8 to 12 inches. When you squat you want three 90 degree angles. These 90 angles are at your hips, knees and ankles. Your shins and upper body are to be perpendicular and your thighs parallel with the ground.

If this sounds too easy add dumbbells for weight. Always remember that for proper instruction be sure to get yourself some simple to follow DVD’s or hire a personal trainer. It makes it even more fun to gather a few friends into the mix and you can each share the cost for the DVD’s and/or trainer. If adding dumbbell weight is still too easy, extend one leg out and perform single leg squats. There are few people that I know who have the leg strength for this exercise.


A push up is another exercise that have multiple options that can be performed.  You can perform this exercise with your hands on the exercise ball and feet on the ground. Added difficulty would be to place your feet on a bench and keeping your hands on the exercise ball.

You can also place your hands on the ground and feet or knees on the exercise ball. To add difficultly you can try diamond push-ups or traveling push-ups. Traveling push-ups is where you move side to side while performing the push-up. You start by doing a normal push-up and then at the top, move the left hand to the right. The right hand then goes out further to the right. You would perform another push-up and move back to the left by moving your right hand to the left and then the left further to the left.

These are just two small examples. There are many, many more. I would like to invite you to do some further investigation on this and try a few of the exercise ball exercises out. There are thousands of examples out there. The benefits will be a stronger core, possibly quicker weight loss and make your body more functional and less prone to injury.

Veal/Asparagus Scallopini

VealAsparagus

Ingredients
  • 4 veal steaks, pounded reasonably flat between two pieces of cling film
  • Plain flour with salt and pepper for coating
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small brown onion, chopped thinly
  • 125 gm mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ cup dry white wine
  • ¼ cup chicken stock
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste (you can use less if you like it less tomatoey)
  • Dash of cream is the original recipe. I used ½ to ¾ of a cup
Instructions
  1. Pound veal to about ¼ inch thickness into scallopini filettes
  2. Cut veal pieces into serving size
  3. Coat veal lightly and evenly in seasoned flour.
  4. Heat butter and oil together (the oil stops the butter from burning).
  5. Brown the veal pieces on high heat and set aside. (don’t overcook or you’ll get leather)
  6. Add mushrooms and onion to pan and cook for a couple of minutes, until onion is softened and slightly browned.
  7. Mix together the wine, stock and tomato paste.
  8. Pour over the mushrooms and onions.
  9. Add cream and reduce sauce
  10. Add browned veal pieces and cook til the meat is heated through.
  11. Serve over garlic mashed potatoes or noodles.

Veal Scallopini has got to be one of my most favorite dishes to not only prepare but to indulge in with a nice Riesling.
