One such occurrence has happened in apartment complexes where they allow pets and smoking, both causing excessive dander to accumulate in the walls and air ducts. Buildings that are not properly maintained or effectively cleaned between tenants have a large number of legal cases against them and it is highly recommended doing your due diligence before signing a lease.

Dust mite eradication is a complex procedure and is very costly to the building owners. Sometimes it may seem like your skin is impossible to manage, especially when you wake up and find a huge zit on your nose or a cold sore at the corner of your mouth. The good news is that there are ways to prevent and treat common skin problems. Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water and a mild soap made for people with acne.

Gently massage your face with circular motions. Don’t scrub. Over washing and scrubbing can cause skin to become irritated. After cleansing, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends applying an over-the-counter (no prescription needed) lotion containing benzoyl peroxide. This will decrease oil and bacteria.

Don’t pop pimples. It’s tempting, but here’s why you shouldn’t: Popping pimples can push infected material further into the skin, leading to more swelling and redness, and even scarring. If you notice a pimple coming before a big event, like the prom, a dermatologist can often treat it for you with less risk of scarring or infection.

Avoid touching your face with your fingers or leaning your face on objects that collect sebum and skin residue like your phone. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that cause pores to become inflamed and irritated. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as treatment creams or makeup.


If you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose. If you get acne on your body, try not to wear tight clothes. They don’t allow skin to breathe and may cause irritation. Scarves, headbands, and caps can collect dirt and oil, too.

Remove your makeup before you go to sleep. When buying makeup, make sure you choose brands that say “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic” on the label. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks different from when you first bought it. Keep hair clean and out of your face to prevent additional dirt and oil from clogging your pores.

Protect your skin from the sun. It may seem like a tan masks acne, but it’s only temporary. A tan may worsen your acne, not improve it. Tanning also causes damage to skin that will eventually lead to wrinkles and increase your risk of skin cancer.


If you’re concerned about acne, talk to a dermatologist. Dermatologists offer a range of treatments that help to prevent and acne scars. A dermatologist can help you find the treatment method that’s best for you and can also give you lots of useful tips for dealing with acne and caring for your skin type. Some salons and spas have trained skin specialists, called estheticians, who can offer advice and skin care treatments.

Replacing Your Toxic Enviroment

bathroom-sink-vanityAs we read the occasional headlines that yet another standard ingredient in the products we use every day turns out to be a toxic counter to the very health and cleanliness the product is supposed to promote. Sometimes the easiest way to ensure that you’re using the healthiest products, from soap to toothpaste is to simply make your own. You can easily make safe, non toxic effective toiletries including Shampoo, Soaps and Deodorant at home using simple and healthy ingredients.  A great way to start eliminating your toxic environmental products is to start in the bathroom.

 

Everything we use to clean up is really a toxic mess.  If you’ve ever read the labels on health and hygiene products, you know it can be a challenge to find a product that doesn’t contain long lists of toxic ingredients you can’t even pronounce, let alone know what they are or what they’re for and the havoc it can cause your body from repeated use.

One can easily argue that most of these ingredients are not in the amounts that can be hazardous to your health, however when you really look into how many toxic ingredients we consume every day from the foods we eat, to the products we use on our bodies, to the soaps we wash our dishes and clothes in, to the chemicals we come into contact with unwillingly like second hand smoke, gasoline fumes we breathe when we fuel our cars to the air we breathe around freeways and roads.  It is no wonder we are a toxic wasteland and our health is paying for it all.


Let’s take a look at some of the basics.  The first thing we need to take a look at is the quality of your tooth paste.  If it has fluoride, or any other ingredients to whiten, or kill germs or even un-natural sweeteners, it is toxic to your body. Here is a great tooth paste you can make using all natural ingredients.  Use a fifty/fifty ratio of coconut oil to baking soda, start with a small batch and use a couple of tablespoons of each.

Add a few drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil, and a bit of Stevia for sweetness.  After mixing your toxic free toothpaste, place it in a glass jar with a lid, and this does not need to be refrigerated.  Use just like you would your old toxic toothpaste.

Let’s take a look at the soaps. Unless you work on dirty and greasy engines all day, you really do not need any soap with industrial names you cannot pronounce.  A simple soap is Shea Butter Soap which is made by taking 2 cups of vegan glycerin soap base, melted in a double boiler, 2 tablespoons of Shea butter melted separately, and then add several drops of your favorite essential oil.  I use lavender for my evening shower soap and peppermint for the mornings and after a good workout.  Mix all these ingredients well, and pour into molds similar to small food storage containers, and let cool.


Raw Organic Vegan Foods

Shampoo has an average of fifteen known chemicals that are hazardous to you and your skin.  Why we consider even using this stuff that can take stains off concrete will always be a mystery to me.  Some of the ingredients to avoid are sodium laurel sulfate, tetrasodium and propylene glycol.  Look them up in a dictionary or simply use an online thesaurus and I can assure you will never consider using this stuff on your body.  To make a simple natural shampoo, use some of these great alternatives:

 

Baking Soda: Works great as a shampoo alternative. Mildly alkaline, baking soda deep cleans your hair from dirt and hair products. Mix about one tablespoon in one cup of water. Use an empty shampoo bottle, water bottle, or a squeeze bottle to dispense in hair just like shampoo and rinse well.

 

Apple Cider Vinegar: Make a hair rinse mixing 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with a quart of water. Don’t worry about the vinegar smell; it will evaporate after a while. This mixture adds shine and works great on dandruff.


Olive Oil: A wonderful conditioner and hair mask. Wet your hair slightly and add about a teaspoon of olive oil and rub specially on the ends. Wrap your hair inside a towel or shower cap and let it stand up to an hour. Wash well. Your hair will be silky soft and shiny.

 

Avocado and Honey: Mash these ingredients together and rub the mixture on your hair. This is a super-moisturizing hair mask you can use once a week to keep your locks healthy.


Raw Organic Coconut - Live Superfoods

Deodorants are applied under the arms, and if you take a look at our bodies anatomy, our arm pits are designed to serve a certain purpose.  The arrangement of the chest wall, shoulder bones and muscles, and the upper arm create a small hollow called the armpit. The armpit is the underside of the shoulder joint, and is among the warmest areas of the body.

The armpit is also called the axilla and allows for blood and lymph vessels serving the arm to travel through the armpit. There are more than 20 lymph nodes, (small lumps of tissue that are part of the body’s lymphatic system, which helps fight infection) in the armpit. These lymph nodes normally cannot be felt through the skin. The armpits have a high concentration of hair follicles and sweat glands.

Applying anything chemically based in these areas is a huge cause of concern and should not be taken lightly.  Take a look at your deodorant’s ingredient list, did you see something like Parabens, Triclosan and  Propylene glycol?  If you did, be shocked at what these chemicals can do to your lymphatic system.  So now it’s good to remember why you might want to choose a natural deodorant in the first place.  Conventional products tend to contain a whole host of best to avoid substances including hormone disruptors, petrochemicals, lung irritants, and other suspect ingredients.

If you search the Internet, you’ll also find quite a bit of discussion about links between deodorant chemicals and both Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer, these links are unproven, but the specter of a problem is enough for some people to avoid conventional deodorants all together.  Here are a few natural alternatives you can make at home that really work.


This recipe is easy to make, inexpensive and works better than commercial brands and it doesn’t stain your clothes! You’ll just have to make your own batch to see how heavenly the scent of coconut oil is when mixed with spicy essential oils.

Ingredients

1/3 cup coconut oil (solid state)

1/4 cup baking soda (aluminum-free)

1/4 cup arrowroot powder

Add Your favorite essential oils (optional)

Instructions

Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder in a glass bowl.
Add the coconut oil (do not warm or melt it) and use a fork or pastry blender to thoroughly blend it into the dry ingredients.  Add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils and blend completely.
Add more coconut oil or arrowroot powder/baking soda if needed until the texture is about the same consistency as commercial deodorant.

Scoop the mixture into a small jar or container and store at room temperature. To apply, use your fingers to scoop out a pea-size amount of the deodorant and massage it into your armpits daily or as needed. Allow a minute or two for the deodorant to set before getting dressed.

These are just three of the most commonly used needs that we consume every day.  If there are special and unique products you use I suggest, get on the internet and find all your replacements and remove all toxins from your body.  Not just on the inside but also on the outside.  You will feel a huge difference in your health and wellbeing.

Indian Cuisine – Your Path to a Better You!

Indian cuisine encompasses a wide variety of regional cuisines native to India. Given the range of diversity in soil type, climate and occupations, these cuisines vary significantly from each other and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruits.  Indian food is also heavily influenced by religious and cultural choices.

The development of these cuisines has been shaped by Hindu and Jain beliefs, in particular vegetarianism which is a common dietary trend in Indian society.  There has also been Arab influence on North Indian cuisine from the years of Mughal and Delhi Sultanate rule.

Indian cuisine has been and is still evolving, as a result of the nation’s cultural interactions with other societies.  Historical incidents such as foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism have also played a role in introducing certain foods to the country. For instance, potato, a staple of North Indian diet was brought to India by the Portuguese, who also introduced chilies and breadfruit.

Indian cuisine has also shaped the history of international relations, the spice trade between India and Europe is often cited by historians as the primary catalyst for Europe’s Age of Discovery.  Spices were bought from India and traded around Europe and Asia. It has also influenced other cuisines across the world, especially those from Southeast Asia, the British Isles and the Caribbean.

Indian cuisine reflects a 5000-year history of various groups and cultures interacting with the subcontinent, leading to diversity of flavors and regional cuisines found in modern-day India. Later British and Portuguese influence added to the already diverse Indian Cuisine.

The beginnings of Indian Cuisine lie with the ancient Indian civilizations of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.  Since then, Indian Food has been influenced by a number of factors and each of these has made the food of India known the world over.

The staples of Indian cuisine are rice, atta (a special type of whole wheat flour), and at least five dozen varieties of pulses, the most important of which are chana, toor, urad, and mung.  Chana is used in different forms, may be whole or processed in a mill that removes the skin. Most Indian curries are fried in vegetable oil, however many substitutes can be used such as coconut oil or even mustard seed oil.

The most important spices in Indian cuisine are the chili pepper, black mustard seed, cumin, turmeric, fenugreek, ginger, coriander and hing.  Another very important spice is garam masala which is usually a powder of five or more spices comprising of cardamom, cinnamon and clove.  Some leaves that are widely used is the bay leaf, coriander leaf, and mint leaf.  Typically in south Indian cuisine, curry leaves are used commonly.  In sweet dishes, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron and essence of rose petal are used.

Indian Chinese cuisine originated in the 19th century among the Chinese community of Calcutta, during the immigration of Hakka Chinese from Canton (present-day Guangzhou) seeking to escape the Opium Wars and political instability in the region. Exposure to local Indian cuisine, they incorporated many spices and cooking techniques into their own cuisine, thus creating a unique fusion of Indian and Chinese cuisine.

After 1947, many Cantonese immigrants fleeing political repression under Mao Zedong, opened their own restaurants in Calcutta, whose dishes combined aspects of Indian cuisine with Cantonese cuisine. Indian Chinese cuisine is heavily derived from traditional Chinese cuisine, it bears little resemblance to its Chinese counterpart. The dishes tend to be flavored with cumin, coriander seeds, and turmeric, which with a few regional exceptions, are not traditionally associated with Chinese cuisine. Chili, ginger, garlic and yogurt are also frequently used in dishes.

 

Popular dishes include Chicken Manchurian, Chicken lollipop, Chili chicken, Hakka noodles, Hunan chicken, and Szechwan fried rice. Soups such as man chow soup and sweet corn soup are very popular, whereas famous desserts include ice cream on honey-fried noodles and date pancakes. Indians consider a healthy breakfast (known in North India as nashta) important. They generally prefer to drink tea or coffee with breakfast, though food preferences vary regionally. North Indian people prefer roti, parathas, and a vegetable dish, accompanied by achar (pickles) and some curd. People of western India prefer dhokla and milk and South Indians prefer idlis and dosas, generally accompanied by various chutneys.

Lunch in India usually consists of a main dish of rice in the south and east, or whole wheat rotis in the north and west. It typically includes two or three kinds of vegetables, and sometimes items such as kulcha, naan, or parathas. Along with dessert, paan (betel leaves), which aid digestion, are often eaten after lunch in parts of India. Indian families often gather for “evening breakfast,” similar to tea time to talk, drink tea and eat snacks. Dinner is considered as the main meal of the day.

There are many dietary restrictions that people follow based on the religion or faith they profess. Muslims in India do not eat pork and many Hindu communities consider beef taboo. Since it is believed that Hindu scriptures condemn cow slaughter, beef consumption has been banned in many states in India. Followers of the Swaminarayan sect do not eat garlic and onions because they are advised against it in the Vachanamrut. Jains follow a strict form of vegetarianism, known as Jain vegetarianism, which in addition to being completely vegetarian, also excludes potatoes and other root vegetables because when the root is pulled up, organisms that live around the root also die.

Traditionally, meals in India were eaten while seated either on the floor or on very low stools or cushions. Food is most often eaten with the right hand rather than cutlery. Often roti is used to scoop curry without allowing it to touch the hands. In the wheat-producing north, a piece of roti is gripped with the thumb and middle finger and ripped off while holding the roti down with the index finger. Traditional serving styles vary regionally throughout India. Contact with other cultures has affected Indian dining etiquette. For example, the Anglo-Indian middle class commonly uses spoons and forks, as is traditional in Western culture.

In South India, cleaned banana leaves, which can be disposed of after meals, are used for serving food. When hot food is served on banana leaves, the leaves add distinctive aromas and taste to the food. Leaf plates are less common today, except on special occasions.

Chocolate-FigsW1Don’t we all want a little more lust and passion in our lustful lives? If you answered no to this question you were either lying, or you were just lying. Of course we’re all looking for lust and passion in our lives. Sure, you could turn to the movies for some titillating ideas. Or there’s books, for the more cerebral folks out there. Maybe some toys or costumes (or both) are your go to things. The lustful accounts for specialty, just the fact of celebrating this in 2013 is justifiable reason in itself! Who would have thought that the Mayan’s would ever think up this incredible recipe?

Sexy Figs for Love!

I happen to go with these lines of thought for this “Lustful holiday of hearts.” But I do like to use it as a reminder that we all need a little kick in the butt sometimes to re-calibrate our lust-o-meter, and any day is just as good.

Also if your idea of fig recipes starts and ends with Fig Newtons or cheese stuffed figs wrapped in bacon, prepare to have your mind blown! In my world, fig recipes will begin and end with this one.

Valentines chocolate is one of those aphrodisiac food items that simply oozes sexiness. I’m pretty sure there’s not one other ingredient that I would deem worthy of causing me to be photographed naked for. Remember my chocolate recipe for the charity book Nudie Foodies? Calling these lusty figs, chocolate figs, just does not do this little bite of decadence justice.

We start with a curvaceous fruit, the fig, which is soft and supple. Once opened, the soft center reveals an almost honey scented and flavored flesh. The rich chocolate ganache filling adds a bit of firmness to the soft fig as well as a fullness that escapes into your mouth immediately upon biting into this delicacy. Of course there needs to be a touch of spirits in this treat.

After all, spirits add to seduction….don’t they? So the sexy little figs are soaked in a bath of ruby Port. Not only does the Port add a nice bit of red fruits flavor to the confection, but it helps to soften the dried fig as well. And how are these little treats finished off? They’re enrobed in a thin coat of chocolate so you get a bit of a crunch to go along with all of the softer decadence. Are you drooling yet?

Oh, and you’ll have plenty of the chocolate ganache left over after filling these chocolate figs. Wondering what to do with it? My suggestion is to take it into the bedroom with you and use it as a unbelievably delicious body paint.

Dairy Free Pasta Alfredo

Dairy Free Alfredo!A little about the history of Alfredo Sauce. Alfredo sauce also known as Fettuccine Alfredo, is a very rich and creamy, dairy based sauce blended with Butter, Heavy Whipping Cream and Parmesan cheese. A dairy lover’s delight, it is usually served over a bed of Fettuccine. Various combinations of Chicken, even occasionally served with ham or bacon. Either way it does not have to include meat. A great variation is shrimp or even steamed clams.

The dilemma however is, what can a non-dairy person like me do to enjoy the wonderful flavor of this culinary wonderland? Well many variations of non-dairy are out there for the culinary appetites but none of them come close to satisfying the essence of a true Alfredo sauce, until now.

I have been an avid consumer of dairy products for some time. With a passionate love for milk, cheese, and ricotta and of course Parmesan and mozzarella, I have countless number of recipes that include one or more of the various types of cheeses, creams, butter and milk.

Since my recent discovery on how milk and dairy affects the digestive system, and since the increasing need to use antibiotics in dairy cows, I have lost the taste or even desire to consume anything to do with milk products.

However my desire for a rich and creamy sauce has not gone away and I spent hours and hours trying to formulate a copy that comes close to the richness and flavor of this Italian staple.

Many trial and errors and countless disappointments I finally managed to create a “Non-Dairy” version of Alfredo Sauce with the same texture and essence. I trust you will enjoy this substitute as much as I.

Please try this at home!

Ingredients;

1 Cup of Almond Milk
½ Cup of Coconut Milk
2 Egg Whites
2 Tbs. of Olive Oil
½ Cup of Finely Crushed Pine Nuts
2 Tbs. of finely chopped Garlic
1 Tbs. Garlic Powder
¼ Tsp. Cream of Tartar
½ Tsp. of Ground Cumin
¼ Tsp. Nutmeg
½ Tsp. Salt

Preparation;

In a glass bowl add 1 Tbs. of Olive Oil, Egg Whites and Cream of Tartar. Whisk rapidly together until egg whites come to a rich froth. Add the coconut milk and whisk some more until well blended, add the almond milk and continue to whisk until the mixture is very well blended.

Heat a saucepan to medium heat, add the remaining olive oil and chopped garlic. Cook the garlic just prior to browning and add the blended egg white mixture from the bowl. In the saucepan whisk until mixture thickens slightly and add the finely crushed pine nuts and dry spices. This will cause the foam of the heated sauce to settle.

Cook until the sauce thickens and serve over pasta or your choice. Add desired pasta toppings and you’re done!

Broiled Basa Fillet with Cashew

Basa and BeetThe Basa fish, Pangasius bocourti, is a type of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. Basa are native to the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam and Chao Phraya basin located in Thailand. These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labeled in North America and Australia as “basa fish” or bocourti”. In the UK, the species is known mainly as “river cobbler”,with “basa” also being used on occasion. In Europe, these fish are commonly marketed as “pangasius” or “panga”

 

Even fish aren’t safe from bureaucracy;

In 2002, the United States accused Vietnam of dumping catfish, namely Pangasius bocourti and Pangasius hypophthalmus, on the American market, charging the Vietnamese importers, who are subsidized by Vietnam’s government, of unfair competition.

With pressures from the U.S. catfish industry, the United States Congress passed a law in 2003 preventing the imported fish from being labeled as catfish, as well as imposing additional tariffs on the imported fish. Under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruling, only species from the family Ictaluridae can be sold as true catfish. As a result, the Vietnamese exporters of this fish now label their products sold in the U.S. as Basa fish or Bocourti.

With all this said, the United Sates Food and Drug Administration is now allowing Genetically Modified Salmon to endanger the wildlife population.  This fish rightfully labeled “Frankenfish” is going to add to the ever so great GMO Labeling issues we are now being faced with.  Not only is the bureaucracy adding to lawmakers job security, the health risks being uncovered from GMO’s being linked to cancer and other life threatening disease is securing the jobs of countless doctors and hospitals, giving the U.S population more issues to deal with.

Personally I’d rather eat a mislabeled catfish than consume what the FDA deems to be a species that’s man made vs. created by our mother earth.

So to continue this, Please enjoy this recipe, Broiled Basa Fillet and Cashew Nut/Egg Topper served over organic brown rice and plated with a cilantro beet salad and blood orange.

Ingredients;

4 Basa Fish Fillets
4 Beets
1 Cup finely chopped Cashews
1 (Hard Boiled) Egg Yolk
2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Cup of Organic Brown Rice
¼ cup chopped cilantro
1 Blood Orange
1 Tsp. Turmeric
1 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1 Tsp. Salt


Preparation;

Cilantro/Beet salad;

Boil beets in water until soft, peel and quarter each one and place in a bowl, toss with One Tbsp. of Coconut Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar and Salt and Pepper to taste.  Plate with a sprinkle of finely chopped cilantro.

Organic Brown Rice;

Boil Two cups of water, add One cup of Organic Brown Rice reduce heat and simmer until done.

Cashew / Egg Topper;

In a food processor blend cashews, hard-boiled egg yolk, one tbsp. of coconut oil and add a small amount of water until forming a thick spreadable paste.

Basa Fillets;

Coat the fillets with salt, cayenne pepper, and turmeric.  Broil for 15 minutes each side.  Cover with Cashew topper and continue broiling until topper is slightly browned.

Plating;

Serve Cilantro Beet salad, three wedges of blood orange and plate a Basa fillet over two heaping tablespoons of brown rice.

Unlike many people who write juicer reviews, I am not a long-time juicer. In fact, despite being a graduate of one of the premier culinary schools in America and having worked as a professional chef, I have never juiced anything in my life. A friend who is very much into healthy eating persuaded me to try some of his various juice combinations and after a taste or two I knew I had to have one. Then followed lots of research to find the best choice for my pocketbook and my lifestyle. As a sometime kitchen professional, I have a fondness for “commercial” equipment and so I ended up lusting over a Norwalk. But $2500 for a juicer the size of Wrigley Field with a hydraulic press…too much.

I debated long and hard over centrifugal versus auger or gear driven machines. Now, I should stop here for a disclaimer. I do not drink juice to detoxify my liver or to prevent/treat cancer, heart disease, gallstones, or flat feet. I drink it because I like the taste and because it gets raw fruit and vegetables into my body in a way that has to be healthy. Please, I do not need any Gerson folks or other enthusiasts to comment telling me that I should…you-fill-in. Don’t take that as a put-down. I respect the choices people make for their health and, in fact, many juicing enthusiasts are doubtless much healthier than I.

Juice For Life Power Juicers

The implication of this is that I don’t seek out organic produce unless I can get it cheap, nor do I worry about how much of the good stuff is going to be lost to oxidation if there is foam in the juice. That just isn’t who I am.

Because I no longer have a scullery worker to wash up behind my efforts, I wanted something that was easy to clean. Because I enjoy the product a lot more than the process, I wanted a machine that didn’t require me to do a lot of food prep. Because I’m not wasteful by nature, I wanted a device that extracted as much juice as possible.

I was drawn to the Breville Juice Fountain Elite. It is hefty stainless steel and you can dump whole apples or beets into it without cutting or chopping. Fast. Easy. But only a one-year warranty, a well-documented tendency to throw food all over the kitchen and considerable commentary about its limited ability to extract maximum juice. I looked at juicers from Omega, Green Star, Kuvings, Champion, Hurom…the list goes on and on. While they got good reviews, there were also comments about durability, size, speed, and so on.

I chose a lesser-known juicer, The Jay Kordich PowerGrind Pro, The description of the innards is a bit vague, even on Jay’s website so let me tell you exactly how it works. In essence, it is a centrifugal juicer. It shreds the fruit and vegetables and spins them against a fine, cone-shaped stainless steel filter, literally slinging out the juice. The difference is that surrounding the shredder disk is a grinding ring maybe 5/16″ wide which mates with a similar ring mounted on the top housing.

The motor runs at a substantially slower speed than most centrifugal juicers but much, much faster than an auger/gear machine. The produce is shredded and then ground between the two rings, which are positioned just a fraction of a millimeter apart. The result is very dry pulp. After juicing a bag of apples, a couple of pears, ginger, celery, and carrots, I found that I could pick up a handful of the pulp and squeeze really hard yielding only a few drops of unextracted juice.

Choices thru Consequence

Good health is foundational for the sense of personal, societal, physical and mental well being. The ability to enjoy life means the necessity to evaluate every choice that is presented from the results of previous choices individuals have been taught or made for themselves thus learning. During the span of life, since birth society is conditioned to making choices. The consequences of the choices determine how to live life.

 

Seeing fire for the first time, the desired choices are to touch it, the consequence is getting burned, and from there on out we know that the next time fire is seen, the choice will not be to touch it and simply get burned.

Yet in certain aspects in life as transitioning to the various stages, from birth to death, learning to live life not based on the choice but rather determined by the consequence faced, therefore subjecting into a conditioning of living in fear of consequence. A perfect example of this is thru decisions made towards health and well being.

Over a lifetime, realizing that the consequence of not taking care of our health by subjecting our bodies to constant consumption of unhealthy food choices and deter from daily exercise has a detrimental consequence. Sickness, disease, obesity and the labels go on and on. Yet continuing to make poor choices based on a desire or given need and not the consequence.

A family will tend to raise their children with the choices of the lack of fulfilled desires that as children themselves were not privileged too, by either a poor economic state of the parents or by the discipline of not getting everything they as children desired. In today’s technological world, children are subjected to a huge amount of information, so vast that the need for parental education has simply almost become obsolete.

A simple one word question a child would be to ask, is “why?” In today’s environment the answer to that very infamous word is simply typed into a search bar and alas, the consequence is that everything on that word pops up. We can find pages and pages of results linking more and more pages to more results and so on until eternity. So vast that it would boggle any educated mind.

So my question is, as an adult, educated and ever knowing as we consider ourselves to be. “Why?” do we continue to make poor choices in our diets knowing that the consequences are all the labels I mentioned prior?

If we are amazed after a doctor’s visit when we are told we are diabetic, yet not realize that the daily overdose of sugar and other various toxins induced into our pancreas causing it to shut down completely or excite it to the point of overproducing insulin, could have been caused by the everyday abuse we have become so accustomed too. Like eating processed products with high contents of corn syrups, caffeine and sugars, drinking a two liter of soda every day, or simply looking forward to consuming that caramel macchiato every morning at the local coffee house.

You see, the consequence as a sick society, is the choices of learning that speeding would eventually lead to a costly ticket, how many of us still speed regardless? Yet we abuse our bodies daily while knowing the ramifications of disease. It astoundingly amazes me that as I sit and read a menu at a local restaurant, the choices that most people would order would be a two to three course meal or simply eat their favorite craving they have at the time that got them in there in the first place. While I on the other hand look at the same menu I have seen many times before with better choices and end up loosing my appetite just by imagining what is entering my body and the ramifications it may have as I age.

Why do we deter from physical exercise or make the choices to stop the dieting, or simply give in to our cravings with consequence? To me the answer is simple. Because the consequence is how we make our choices. If we are ok with the inevitable consequence of poor health choices, the saying goes to justify “We only live once”, instead choosing to realize “We live every day, we only die once”. Thus changing the way we see things.

So here we are, we awake as the alarm clock sounds and get ready for our day to day knowing we have a set time to accomplish all we have to face. The mere idea of the choice of having to set the alarm clock one hour earlier to start our day with exercise makes the average Joe cringe. We know that if we do not exercise regularly the onset consequences of numerous health issues will eventually catch up with us in due time. So we tend to procrastinate regardless and make excuses why we can’t.

Eat Healthy

This thinking can easily be changed by considering that after exercise we will be more energetic, and more awake as our bodies received a greater amount of oxygen. We can exchange the sugary morning cereal with Ugh! Dairy milk that we followed by a cup of coffee with pancakes and syrup along with a side of sausage and or bacon. Instead choose to drink a glass of fresh juiced beets, leaves and all, mixed with orange juice. Pour a nice glass of Almond milk and eat instead a boiled or poached egg with sprouted grain toast, and realize the fact that this has the same sugary satisfaction and natural energy while also being just as fulfilling.

Changing the way we think can and is obviously a healthier alternative to help keep us stay alive much longer and in a better state of mind to handle the day. If we look at this in such a way that if we don’t do it this way we will get a disease we subject to the fear and we can then easily procrastinate and say “odds are it won’t happen”.

Swai Basil in Almond Milk

Swai Lemon and BasilLike many people interested in healthful eating, I strive to incorporate more fish into my diet, especially varieties like Swai, Salmon and Herring, which contain plenty of heart-healthy Omega 3 fatty acids. Problem is, fresh seafood costs a bundle.

When I visited my local fish monger. I couldn’t believe my eyes at nearly $20 a pound for swordfish, halibut, sole, and $9 for trout, Fresh Chilean Sea Bass at nearly $25 per pound! which in the past had always been tasty and less costly alternative.

I always opt for “wild caught”, I investigate the waters it came from and ascertain it has not been frozen. Fresh is key when it comes to great fish.

Live Superfoods - The Raw Superfoods Superstore

The bestway to tell that fresh fish is not fishy smelling or tasting is simply buying it fresh caught and preferably whole.  The eyes are clear and it does not smell. When commercial fish has been caught, immediately frozen on the boat then de-thawed for processing, prepared and packaged and then again frozen for shipping to the consumer’s market, where it is once again de-thawed and sold is when you run the risk of getting poor quality, smelly fish and of course the price will reflect that.

Ever since prices started climbing, I’ve seen an influx of alien species, at least particularly at my neighborhood supermarkets, which cater to customers who, frankly, can’t afford to plunk down $20 a pound for fish.

One economical option popping up at many stores is Swai, which is native to Southeast Asia – Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia — and sells locally for around $3.99 a pound. Since I knew nothing about Swai, I searched it out on the internet and these are my findings. Swai, along with Basa and Tra, two related varieties also appearing at more and more stores, belong to what’s called the Pangasius family and they’re similar in character to catfish.


We'll Cook the Food, You'll Lose the Weight!

In fact, sometimes simply referred to in the U.S. only as catfish, and farmed in the waters off the Mississippi. (Be sure to look for country of origin labeling at the fish counter to determine whether your catfish is from the Mekong Delta or the Mississippi Delta). Swai is a soft white-flesh fish (typically available in fillet form) with a sweet mild, taste and light flaky texture that can be broiled, grilled, or coated with bread crumbs and fried, according to experts.

It can be prepared simply, but also takes well to sauces. A 3.5-ounce serving of plain fish contains around 90 calories, 4 grams of fat (1.5 saturated), 45 grams of cholesterol and 50 milligrams of sodium. Since I found out from cooking a vast amount of Swai, it is a very light and delicate fish similar to the Orange Roughy and falls apart when handled too much during cooking. So I tend to take delicate fish and bake them in Almond Milk while using fresh herbs for seasoning.

4 to 6 fillets of Fresh Caught Swai
6 to 10 Large Fresh Cinnamon Basil Leaves (Leave Whole)
2 Cups of Non-GMO Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 Lemon, (Zested and Juiced)
1 Tsp. Fresh Himalayan Salt
1 Tsp. Turmeric
1 Tbs. Extra Virgin White Truffle Olive Oil

In a glass baking dish coat the bottom with the Olive Oil. Layer the fish fillets evenly along dish and sprinkle with salt to taste, placing the Basil in between the layers. Add the fresh squeezed Lemon Juice coating evenly the top layer. Cover and place in refrigerator for about half an hour.

Pre-Heat Oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit, remove the fish from the refrigerator and pour in the Almond Milk. Sprinkle with Turmeric and Zest of the Lemon. Bake for approximately 20 min. or until fish fillets flake easily with a fork. Serve over Organic Non-Seasoned Brown Rice.

GINATAANG HIPON is a traditional Filipino stew that contains seafood such as shrimp and fish. Seafood is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Regularly consuming omega-3 fats can help reduce inflammation, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve diabetic blood sugar control.

GINATAANG HIPON INGREDIENTS:

1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic chopped
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon tumeric
1 teaspoon curry powder
1 teaspoon cayanne powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup lemon grass
1/3 cup fresh sliced ginger
1/3 cup green onions
2 cups coconut milk
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons fish sauce
1/2 cup water
1Lb medium size whole shrimps (leave heads and shell intact)

GINATAANG HIPON PROCEDURES:

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil and stir fry garlic, add onions and ginger simmer until onions are clear.
  2. Add the green onions, lemon grass and salt.  Stir fry lightly then add 1/4 cup coconut milk bring to boil.
  3. Add the remaining coconut milk, water, vinegar and fish sauce. Add dry spices and shrimp. Cook stirring over low heat until it thickens, for about 8-10 minutes. You may garnish with cilantro for added flavor.
